Harvest Dinner 2024

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, connection, and family gatherings. However, the holiday season can sometimes feel isolating for nursing home residents, especially if family visits are limited. With a bit of planning and creativity, caregivers can ensure that Thanksgiving is a warm and memorable occasion for nursing home residents, allowing them to feel included and appreciated.

Sunnyview’s annual harvest dinner was celebrated on November 22, 2024. Teresa Smith (Director of Activities) coordinated the entire event from planning, calling families, making invitations, reservations, and decorations. “I enjoy doing this event every year to allow families to come out to see their loved ones and have a huge thanksgiving feast”. Kim Schlegal (Dietary Manager) and her department crew planned and made the entire meal. They provided turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, stuffing, hot rolls, and pumpkin pie. Families brought in extra sides and deserts as well.

We had a total of 56 residents and over 120 guests gathered around tables and enjoying a thanksgiving dinner with their loved ones.

Families were greeted by our Director of Social Services Celeste Hignutt and Business Office Manager Leona Ricketts at the front door where they were guided to their tables where their loved ones were. Sunnyview went live on their Facebook account to witness prayer lead by Daniel Stith (Director of Nursing) and an announcement made by Trish Smith (Administrator).

Trish Smith announced that Sunnyview is working on a plan to allow private rooms to ALL residents regardless of payer source. This will allow residents more room and a more home-like space to call their own while in a nursing home setting. Trish also pitched in and helped serve families and residents their thanksgiving meal.

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate togetherness, gratitude, and the importance of family. With a few thoughtful preparations, families and caregivers can make Thanksgiving memorable for nursing home residents and ensure they feel loved, valued, and connected.

Whether you can be there in person or connect from afar, each small gesture can bring joy to their holiday and create memories that last well beyond Thanksgiving Day.

Lots of smiles and laughs were had during this years Harvest Dinner. Sunnyview already cannot wait until 2025!
